Dictionary description: To sublimate = To cause a solid or gas to change state without becoming a liquid.
The Sublimation Process: The process of die sublimation printing uses a special designed ink that is printed with a jet printer on sublimation paper in mirror image. The image is than transferred to a Polyester or Polyurethane material using heat and pressure over a short time period. The sublimation ink bonds to Polyester after the Polyester material is cooled . The image can not be washed out or scratched off and is very durable. Fabric with at least 60% Polyester can also be transfer printed. If a ceramic or glass cup is Polyester coated it can be printed with the sublimation process.
Advantages The advantage of Polyester fabric is that it is strong, breathes and does not restrict moisture passage, which is especially of importance for sportswear. A screen printed fabric or heat transferred fabric blocks moisture passage and can get very uncomfortable to wear. In addition the image does not crack, peel or fade over time. The sublimation process lends itself for individual items like sport shirts that require the persons name on the shirt or for shirts of a sports team. Because the image is created on a computer each sport shirt can be different and small quantities are possible.
How to get started: In order to start your sublimation printing process you need a computer with graphic design software and RIP ( = Raster Image Protocol ) software to change the image density. For the printer you need four sublimation ink cartridges, Black, Magenta, Yellow and Cyan. In addition you need a heat transfer press.
